I have been reading a book about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. When the captain of the Fitz called the Coast Guard for help, the cry was ignored by a rookie Coastie. When her sister ship, the Anderson, called to tell the Coast Guard that the ship had disappeared, a few minutes after the captain could not locate the ship, sixty minutes after the ship disappeared and ninety minutes without any sound or sign or sighting of the Fitz. The Coast Guard did not go into the “storm of the century” to help the captain and crew of the Fitz. On November 10, 1975, the Fitz went down without help from the authorities that were sworn to help ships of all sizes in all weather.
1 John 3:17- “But whoever has worldly goods and sees his brother or sister in need, and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God remain in him?” Do we hear the cry of those in crises and respond to them according to the gospel living in us, or do we judge them for the decisions they make that we think landed them in the mess they are in?
John: 15:12-13: “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends.” We must love one another and put others ahead of ourselves.
